Instructions for deleting all content and structure from a standard Joomla! install

When you initially install Joomla!, unless you un tick the box marker 'Install sample content' you will have a number or articles, sections, categories and menu structure installed. Before you can start building your site you will need to remove this content.

Here are the steps required to delete all contents via the Administrator interface

1. Log in as the Super Administrator (admin)

2. Go to Content > All Content Items

3. Click the tick box in the items header bar (between # and Title). Ticks will appear in front of all the content items

4. Click the large button marked 'Trash' on the navigator bar. All the items will be moved to the waste bin

5. Go to Content > Static Content Manager

6. Click the tick box in the items header bar (between # and Title). Ticks will appear in front of all the content items

7. Click the large button marked 'Trash' on the navigator bar. All the items will be moved to the waste bin

8. Go to the Home Page and click the large button Marked Trash Manager.

9. Click the tick box in the items header bar (between # and Title). Ticks will appear in front of all the content items. Click the large button marked Delete. You get a warning explaining that this is not a reversible step. Press the delete button. All the text articles have now been permanently deleted.

10. Go to Content > Category Manager

11. Click the tick box in the items header bar (between # and Category Name). Ticks will appear in front of all the content items

12. Click the large button marked 'Trash' on the navigator bar. All the items will be moved to the waste bin (Note: All content items must be deleted from Trash before the Category containing that content can be deleted).

13. Go to Content > Section Manager

14. Click the tick box in the items header bar (between # and Section Name). Ticks will appear in front of all the sections

15. Click the large button marked 'Trash' on the navigator bar. All the items will be moved to the waste bin

16. Go to Menu > Main Menu

17. Click the tick box in the items header bar (between # and Menu). Ticks will appear in front of all the content items

18. Click the large button marked 'Trash' on the navigator bar. All the items will be moved to the waste bin

19. Repeat the above steps for Other Menu, Top Menu and User Menu to remove all the menus links

20. Go to Home > Trash Manager. Select the Menu Items tab.

21. Click the tick box in the items header bar (between # and Title). Ticks will appear in front of all the menu items. Click the large button marked Delete. You get a warning explaining that this is not a reversible step. Press the delete button. All the menu links have now been permanently deleted.

22. Go to Home > Media Manager.

23. Click on the Banners folder. For each item, click the trashcan icon to delete the banner. When finished click the icon to go up to the root image directory

24. Click on the Stories folder. For each item, click the trashcan icon to delete the directory or image. When finished click the icon to go up to the root image directory

25. Go to Components > Poll Manager.

26. Click the tick box in the items header bar (between # and Poll Title). Ticks will appear in front of all the polls

27. Click the large button marked 'Trash' on the navigator bar. All the items will be moved to the waste bin

28. Go to Components > WebLinks > WebLink Items.

29. Click the tick box in the items header bar (between # and Title). Ticks will appear in front of all the link items

30. Click the large button marked 'Trash' on the navigator bar. All the items will be moved to the waste bin

31. Go to Components > WebLinks > WebLink Categories.

32. Click the tick box in the items header bar (between # and Category). Ticks will appear in front of all the categories

33. Click the large button marked 'Trash' on the navigator bar. All the items will be moved to the waste bin

34. Go to Components > News Feeds > Manage News Feeds.

35. Click the tick box in the items header bar (between # and Newsfeed). Ticks will appear in front of all the newsfeed items

36. Click the large button marked 'Trash' on the navigator bar. All the items will be moved to the waste bin

37. Go to Components > News Feeds > Newsfeed Categories.

38. Click the tick box in the items header bar (between # and Category). Ticks will appear in front of all the categories

39. Click the large button marked 'Trash' on the navigator bar. All the items will be moved to the waste bin

40. Finally, you will need to switch off (un-published) the modules which will not be used in the initial working example.

41. Go to Modules > Site Modules

42. Select items 3,4,5,6,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20 with the tick bar and press the Unpublish button. You will then see a red 'X' in the published column.
